PRESS RELEASE Sept 2009
Free counselling service for young people comes
to Guildford.
Relate is launching
their free counselling service for young people aged 10-18 in Guildford
and Gomshall in September, thanks to the generous donation of a
grant from Star Energy.
Young people who have been affected by their
parents relationship difficulties either recently or some time ago,
can ring 01483 715285 to make an appointment themselves or their
parents can ring on their behalf. Relate provides a non-judgemental
environment where young people can talk about their problems in
complete confidence and can be supported through difficult times.
Parents and schools have reported that Relate
counselling has provided support when family issues have adversely
affected a young persons behaviour and well-being.
Case Studies:
1. Chrissie,
a 12 year old, was becoming withdrawn and anxious. Her mum
and dad lived apart and the arrangement was that she would visit
her dad each weekend. This was becoming difficult as she often refused
to go and constantly texted her mum when she was there, asking to
come home. Her mum was getting anxious about what could be happening
at dads home and dad was anxious that his relationship with
his daughter was drifting apart and he would lose her. Chrissie
worked out with the counsellor that it was her fear of leaving her
mums home behind, because she may lose her place in her mums
new family that made her anxious about going to her dads. Her mum
had a new partner and baby. As the counselling continued, she was
able to voice her fears to her mum, who helped her to feel that
her place in the family was secure.
2. Jamie was
13. Five years ago his mum and dad divorced and Jamie chose to live
with his dad. As Jamie got older, he felt that his dad had
stopped listening to him, telling him that that he should toughen
up, leaving him feeling anxious and isolated. During counselling,
Jamie was able to talk to the counsellor about his feelings without
the fear of being ridiculed. He told the counsellor that this had
helped him to open up to his parents and feel better about himself.

increase in calls in September as couples and families return from
their summer holidays in need of help. The promise of sun, sand
and sea can turn into a stressful experience for couples with huge
expectations for their two weeks together, whilst families may be
unable to please everyone in their choice of destination and encounter
serious fallings out.
How to avoid the rows:
- Talk about what you want from your holiday before you arrive
- If your relationship is in difficulty dont expect your
holiday to fix it.
- Agree some basic rules about work / life responsibilities and
whether these can be a part of the holiday
- Be realistic about your budget and dont be tempted to
run up huge charges on
credit cards that may cause anxieties when you come back down
to earth.
How can families survive the holidays:
- Make the choice of destination a family event if possible
- If you get lost en route remember that children benefit from
seeing conflict
constructively resolved humour is a great way to dispel
in-car tension.
- If youre going away together for the first time as a step-family
remember that it will feel different and children may express
themselves by sulking enjoy forging new traditions.
- Talk as a couple before you go away about boundaries for your
children
keep a united front if they challenge you.
- Try to find some time to spend alone as a couple!
